Tideway Fingerprint Update - TKU is Here!
Today Tideway releases TKU4, its fourth bi-monthly release of software fingerprints that allow organisations to identify and version leading enterprise software products running in their data centers.
Behind each TKU release is a dedicated team. My role as product manager is to work with customers to drive a prioritised roadmap, how ever the real effort comes from the dedicated team of developers who make up the Tideway’s Knowledge Factory.
Over the past 9 months Tideway Knowledge Factory Team has built software fingerprints for well over 100 products. Initial focus has been on leading products for core application deployment technologies such as databases, web servers, application servers and middleware from organisations such as Apache, BEA, IBM, Red Hat, Sybase, Microsoft, Oracle, Sun, Symantec and Tibco.
In TKU4 the scope has broadened to include system management products from IBM, HP and VMware. In addition we have also released software fingerprints for SAP ABAP and Java technology platforms.
Tideway is in the business of providing quality actionable data. Our experience has shown that critical to successful identification and versioing of software products our developers must: 1) have access to the products to be modelled across platforms, 2) work in conjunction with product experts who have intimate knowledge of the products’ run time processes and deployment patterns. In addition verification by our customers to provide metrics for coverage (platforms and versions for data is returned), precision (level of detail provided eg. product edition and major, minor, service pack info for versions) and accuracy is key.
Moving forward myself and members from the Tideway Knowledge Factory will use this blog to discuss the reasons you should want to identify and versioning software in your data centers and the challenges faced in doing this successfully.
