What We’re Talking About

Mitigation for Litigation

by Martin McEvoy | 18 Apr 2008 | Permalink |

As litigation revolving around transactional systems increases some experts believe we will very soon see cases where not knowing what applications are running on your servers, and where they are, will be construed as professional malpractice or negligence. If this is the case a few high profile cases would help…

Aquatic Adventure

One of the great things about working at Tideway is the varied interests we have around our normal tasks and the felxibility that the work hard, play hard culture extends. A few weeks ago out of the blue I had an opportunity fall in my lap to help sail a yacht from Gosport on the South Coast up to Troon on the West Coast of Scotland. It’s a voyage of around 500 nautical miles and 10 days along the West Country, around Lands End and up the East Coast of Ireland.

Practical Configuration Management

by Martin McEvoy | 11 Apr 2008 | Permalink |

IT management is all about provided IT services to users. For many organisations rapid change, mergers, takeovers and reorganisations have left the services muddled to a point where it is no longer clear what part each Configuration Item (CI) plays in the IT machine.

IT Infrastructure groups are left to…

Are You Talking to Me?

If business services are the stars of modern IT, then legacy systems are a lot like black holes. Yet despite their inherent uncertainty, they represent the promise of technology: they’ve done what they were supposed to do, and they did it without going supernova.

Standards or chaos?

Joel Spolsky recently posted another great article where he at great length and in his usual amusing fashion describes the problems the Internet Explorer 8 team faced in deciding whether or not to adopt an idealistic or a pragmatic view of the world.

The bottom line is that…

Be Reasonable

Artificial intelligence (or AI) has had a bad rap for since the rise and fall of companies in the 1980’s such as Thinking Machines. Google’s mission to answer all questions posed by anyone at anytime around the world such as: “Where shall I go on holiday this Easter?” or “What…
