Cisco VPN under Windows - without using the Cisco VPN client!

by Simon Woodward | 24 Sep 2008 | Permalink | Everything Else, Open Source, Software

Cisco’s Windows VPN client is a decent bit of software in that it’s stable, easy to use and it does what it says on the tin. However, I found myself wishing for an alternative… and much fun ensued.

A Different Kind of Discovery …

On Wednesday night, we hosted a wine tasting event for a number of customers and prospects at Claridges . The event was very well attended, to the point that we had an unexpected “extra” guest (thanks Mark!), putting the arrangements into minor disarray – but nothing that the Claridges…

Aquatic Adventure

One of the great things about working at Tideway is the varied interests we have around our normal tasks and the felxibility that the work hard, play hard culture extends. A few weeks ago out of the blue I had an opportunity fall in my lap to help sail a yacht from Gosport on the South Coast up to Troon on the West Coast of Scotland. It’s a voyage of around 500 nautical miles and 10 days along the West Country, around Lands End and up the East Coast of Ireland.

How to buy a standard in 10 days

Allan recently blogged about ‘Standards or Chaos’ and this seems very appropriate in light of the current tech news.

For those that missed 2007 let me set the stage:

The OASIS foundation (of which Microsoft is/was a part) after a lot of time and effort (many years) had finally…

Economics of energy efficiency

I read a review of a couple of economic investigations into the bounce that you get if you reduce the fuel needed to heat a house or travel a mile by car.  The bounce is the increase in use driven by the reduced price to keep the temperature or drive…

iphones skype 3g

I felt a pang of schadenfreude the other day when I realised that much of the iPhone traffic in London is actually going thro’ wifi, rather than via the telcos – it’s so much faster than 3g, let alone the gsm that’s on the iPhone, and should the users take…

My boss, when our team was building the architecture methods (see Enterprise Architecture), was involved with the UK Government’s development of ITIL. Because I became aware of both the ITIL documentation and the analysis that we used in developing architecture methods, I think that there’s a significant issue that’s…

Low Hanging Data Center Savings

I mentioned in my first Tideway blog ( Thoughts on Climate Change) that I’d measured 2.5% of server assets were still running, although as far as IT reporting was concerned, they’d already been decommissioned.  At first sight this might not seem significant compared to the cost of finding them.…

Enterprise Architecture

Back in the early 90’s I was a consultant in a large systems integrator. Moore’s law and de facto and de jure standardisations were breaking proprietary systems’ stranglehold on customers, driving the ambitions of organsations to increase the scope of their IT across the value chain and to get economies of scale of technology ownership, while increasing the end-to-end automation of their enterprises to reduce business operational costs.
