Hi, I am running the Community Edition 7.1.7 and I have been unable to get the discoveries to find CPU and Memory information for these HPUX Integrity servers. The models include HP RX5670, RX4640, RX7620, RX7640 and RX8640. Has anyone come across this ? Thanks !

Hi Joe, welcome to the forums.

First can I ask you to confirm a couple of things?
1) Are you running full discovery and getting a Host node?
2) Are you getting the ‘model’, ‘unique host id’ and other attributes under the ‘Hardware and Network’ section?

For reference I’ve attached a quick screen shot of another HP-UX machine to show you what I’d expect.

If you can post a corresponding screenshot that would be great.

Thanks for replying ! Yes I ran full discovery and I do have other information in the hardware category. I have attached a screenshot

Which OS are you running, I’ve assumed HP-UX 11 so far?

Would you be happy to attach some data from the system for us? I can show you how to enable discovery recording on Foundation so you could do this.

We are running HP-UX v2 11.23 on all of our HP Integrity servers. I have the same problem on all HP hardware running this OS. (that is, no CPU information and Memory stating 1MB)

Thanks for that info. Could you get us some sample data to check that the commands are running correctly?

To do this we would need to put your Foundation into Record mode. To do this follow these steps:
1) Go to the ‘Administration’ tab
2) Then ‘System Settings’ in the ‘Appliance’ section (system_settings_717.png)
3) Change the top option (‘Discovery Mode’) to ‘Record’ (discovery_mode_717.png)
4) Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click ‘Apply’

Then we need to record a discovery of a machine. Just start a normal one for one or two of the machines, ideally a couple of different models.

Then we need to get the record data. To do this follow these steps:
1) Go to the ‘Administration’ tab
2) Then ‘Support Service’ in the ‘Appliance’ section (support_services_717.png)
3) In the ‘Target Host Data’ please tick the ‘Record Data’ option and put the IP’s you scanned in the ‘IP Range(s)’ field as a comma seperated list. (gather_record_717.png)
4) Give the archive a name and description in the ‘Create Archive’ area – the name needs to be a valid filename so stick to letters/numbers/underscore with no space. (gather_record_717.png)
5) Click the ‘Gather’ button. (gather_record_717.png)
6) After a short while your archive will appear at the top of the ‘Gathered Data Files’ list, click on the name to download it. (gather_record_717.png)

This will contain a unix tarball of the raw command output for us to check. If you’d rather send that via email then let me know and I’ll drop you an email with my address.

When you’ve finished feel free to go and reset the ‘Discovery Mode’ to ‘Normal’, it’s not essential but ‘Record’ does use slightly more disk space than ‘Normal’

Thanks!

I’ve had a quick look and it confirms my suspicions that those areas of the discovery scripts are not returning data.
If you are interested in looking at the script it is at Administration -> Discovery -> Platforms -> HPUX -> host_info

I know that HPUX was one of the platforms we have done a fairly big overhaul on in the up coming 7.2 release. The downside is that having double checked I can’t suggest a simple update to the 7.1.7 script as we changed quite a few things to support the HPUX partition model, but all is not lost as the 7.2 release is happening very shortly and last week we made the pre-release available as a download.

You can get hold of the pre-release on the download page next to the current 7.1.7 community edition.

To save you from downloading another VM image right now what I’m going to do is upload a shell script that will run the same commands that are in the 7.2 discovery scripts. If you can run this on one or two of the hosts and get it back to me I can run the data into one of our test systems to confirm that 7.2 will resolve the issue. Just run the script on a couple of the boxes and redirect it’s output to a file then tar them up.

Once we’ve confirmed 7.2 resolves the issue you can decide if you want to jump in and download the pre release or hang on a few weeks until we update the community edition to 7.2 (I don’t have a date for that yet, sorry).

Great, let us know if it solves the issue for you.

When you get 7.2 you will see we’ve tidied up a few of the UI areas and a few other changes, if you need a hand drop us a post over in the Foundation Prerelease forum.

Great news, I really appreciate you getting back to us.

Could you do me a huge favour? Could you run “getconf CPU_CHIP_TYPE” on that host and send me the output? I want to know why the CPU type is “Unknown CPU” and it’s possible that your output is different from what we’ve seen in the lab. If you can’t then it’s not a problem.

Just so you are aware the current 7.2 is a pre-release and there will not be an upgrade path from it when we do a full release.

I am getting unknown cpu for the following as well:

ia64 hp server rx8620 – 520225284

I just tried our newest HP model – RX8640 and I get no hardware details other than NIC – this is the output from the CPU_CHIP_TYPE – 536936708

Thanks for getting back to us Joe. I have to say that of all the unixes we work with HP-UX is probably the best at making apparently simple information about the system difficult to obtain, though AIX is in the running for that prize too…

Can I just check my understanding, you can discover the Integrity rx8640 ok, but some of the hardware detail is missing? Which attributes?

The rx8640 looks quite a capable machine. It’s possible that there are some differences between the data returned on Montecito vs Montvale core Itaniums. Is it running 11.31 or 11.23?

Given that 7.2 is close to release I want to double check our HP-UX support and we’re doing that internally, any information you could help with would be greatly appreciated as our access to servers like an rx8640 is limited.

Could you run machinfo on this machine and maybe a few of the others you have access to? I’ll happily PM you my email to send it to as there will be machine ids and serial numbers in the data.

Hope you have a great weekend.
