Product Description

Compuware Vantage Service Manager, a proven business service management (BSM) solution, delivers business-aligned views of service delivery by mapping critical business services to the supporting IT infrastructure. It enables IT to effectively engage with line-of-business counterparts to communicate service delivery in business terms and optimize IT operations in accordance with business needs.

Benefits of Vantage Service Manager include:

  • Powerful management-level dashboards that deliver real-time, actionable information about your organization's most important business services.
  • Integration with Compuware Vantage and products such as CA Unicenter, HP OpenView, BMC Patrol and IBM Tivoli for a comprehensive service view.
  • Significant cost savings from improved service, reduced downtime and increased productivity. Real examples of customer savings include a 10 percent reduction in overall IT operations costs, $1.5 million per year in productivity gains and a 50 percent reduction in service-related downtime.

Integration Overview

The integration between Tideway Foundation and Compuware Vantage Service Manager is using the Export 2.1 CSV adapter and the Compuware adapter to generate and maintain services models within Compuware VSM as well as provide an up to date view of changes as seen by Tideway Foundation.

The main aspects of this integration are:

  • Create quick and accurate service models, providing documented business service dependencies and improved service model maintenance.
  • Correlate change events to service monitoring so you can identify the root cause and impact of service degradations.
  • Reduce business risk by identifying unmanaged service components and areas of change instability.

Benefits

The typical metrics for measuring BSM return on investment (ROI) are

  • Time to awareness
  • Time to identification
  • Time to correction
  • Time to validation

In addition to the fact that the integration helps reducing the implementation of service models by 80% and yearly maintenance effort by 30%, the integration provides business benefits in all 4 ROI KPIs:

Time to awareness: With up to date services models and dynamic mapping of events to models, VSM+TWF puts IT operations in a stronger position to catch potential service impacting problems before end user do (until now 74% of alerts were raised from the end user calling the help desk)
Time to identification: By having TWF detected changes exported directly to VSM and presented in an agregated way into the dashboard, IT operations now have an additional tool to quickly identify the root cause of problem. Whereas before they would get notified of events on a specific host about a service that stopped running, they now can understand whether this issue is related to a configuration change.
Time to correction: Through the integration, IT Operation can from the dashboard review the change and decides to escalate it as an un-authorized change in one click, thus triggering the correction process faster that before.
Time to validation: Once the incident has been associated with an un-authorized change and has been escalated for resolution, TWF data change data can be also used to verify that the un-authorized change has been fixed and that the problem is solved.

System Requirements

The following Tideway and Compuware products must be installed and operating correctly:

Compuware product requirement

  • Compuware Vantage Service Manager 4.2

Tideway product requirements

  • Tideway Foundation 7.0 / Export 2.1 (Current)

Implementation

The integration relies on two components, one on the Tideway Foundation side and one on the Compuware VSM side.
The Compuware integration exports Tideway Foundation data into a share folder where it will be picked up and processed by an adapter on Compuware VSM server

Tideway Foundation Configuration

On Tideway Foundation side, the integration uses the Tideway Export 2.1 CSV file adapter combined with the Compuware mapping set 7.0 .

Since Compuware VSM can run on either a Windows or Linux server, the publishing protocol should be chosen accordingly.
The target location for the CSV file adapter specific configuration should be:

 <VSM_INSTALL_DIR>/config/tideway/CSVExports/

Ask your Compuware VSM admin for the VSM_INSTALL_DIR value and corresponding credentials with write access to this folder.

You should use the default csv file configurations.

Compuware VSM Configuration

On Compuware VSM side, the adapter is provided by Compuware. The integration uses a Compuware CSV upload adapter which processes all Tideway generated CSV files imported to the following share:

 <VSM_INSTALL_DIR>/config/tideway/CSVExports/

Compuware Professional Services people will perform this task.
